Communication Tips When Working With a Web Designer

September 4th, 2009

Although web design clients like to think that web design is easy, they rarely see everything involved in getting a website built, filled with content, and optimized. Search engine optimization (SEO) in and of itself is a long process filled with many variables where decisions by your web designer must be made.

Here are some ways web site designers and the client can ensure good communications during the life of a project.

Use email or other written communication for specifications. When discussing a project with a web designer, you will be presenting many details as to what you want for a website. If communication is only over the telephone then it is quite possible that something will get missed out. Also consider that the web designers working may have other clients too. Written communication is the best way to ensure they have your information and refer back to it when necessary.

Listen to the advice that your web designer give you. If you have spoken with others who have worked with the same web designer and they are happy then there is little reason not to have trust. Trust becomes especially important when your web designer recommends that you not have xyz feature or function on your website. For example, Flash websites are very attractive but they are not search engine friendly at all, which means you would have to market it by using other methods or you will have to spend more money on SEO at later times. Unfortunately some people are unaware of this and they think all websites are the same. Depending on what type of business you are in, this may or may not be a big drawback for you.

Clients and web designers should ask the meaning of technical terms. Clients have technical terms specific to their businesses just like web designers have theirs. It is important that all of them be defined and understood so that no incorrect assumptions are made during the website design process.
